CURRICULUM

At Westbury-on-Trym CE Academy, we follow a curriculum framework in conjunction with other Schools and Academies in the Bristol locality, which was originally developed by Edison Learning. We are following the New National Curriculum which was introduced in September 2014 for all year groups.  We evaluate and adapt this in order to meet the specific needs of our children and to ensure it is inspiring and appropriate for them. We take account of, and integrate, learning opportunities available in the immediate locality of Westbury-on-Trym village & Bristol City and which also connects our children with the wider world, such as through our partnerships with Singdi School in Nepal and Lakwatomer Primary School in Gulu, Uganda.

Our curriculum is based on providing an education for each child that enables them to acquire ‘Learning to Learn’ skills and life-long learning skills.  This links directly with the Core Learning Skills that we teach and promote at the Academy; children are encouraged to develop key concepts, skills and understanding which prepare them for life in the 21st Century such as team work and learning with others, being independent, able to adapt to situations quickly and effortlessly and knowing how to reflect on, develop and improve their learning.

As a Church of England School, we nurture the Christian faith in our pupils as well as helping them to develop their knowledge and understanding of other religions and about individual differences. We take our responsibilities to address all Equality issues very seriously, recognising our diverse community and taking every opportunity to celebrate this. We integrate learning experiences across the curriculum in order to develop our pupils’ understanding of British Values and through our termly focus on one Value for Life. We also draw upon national and international events to develop appropriate values in our children such as Black History Month, International Day of Peace, Anti-bullying week, Remembrance Day and many others.

All stakeholders at Westbury-on-Trym CE Academy are encouraged to adhere to our Core Values of:

  • Excellence
  • Community
  • Faith

and they are encouraged to reflect upon their learning, actions and the consequences of these at all times Our thematic project-based approach to the foundation subjects (History, Geography, Art, D&T, Music, Computing and Science) is used as a starting point for exciting, engaging and motivating learning that the Academy strives to stimulate our children.

We recognise the importance of providing a balance of thematic and discrete teaching with an emphasis on life-long learning. Mathematics and Literacy are taught daily but where appropriate, use the Project-based themes as a context for learning.

We believe that the curriculum we offer at Westbury-on-Trym CE Academy has a relevance to the way children learn and think in today’s ever changing society. The cross-curricular links inspire children and lead them to a greater understanding and belief of what and why they are learning.
