Intent: Why teach Art?
Here at Westbury-on-Trym we strive to ensure that children are provided with a high-quality art and design education that should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We want pupils to develop their skills as well as an ability to think critically and expand a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. (Based on National Curriculum).
Implementation: How is Art taught at Westbury on Trym CE Academy?
At Westbury-on-Trym each new term sees a year group explore and master skills linked to one of 6 main art skills: drawing, painting, printing, collage/textiles, 3D form and digital media. Art lessons may take place weekly or over an extended period as part of a topic or project, with cross curricular links being frequently and creatively made. Links with art are also continuously made during the year relating to ‘wow’ events, special festivals and celebrations. Throughout a child’s art and design journey they will learn about a range of significant, historical and modern day artists, and begin to evaluate and analyse creative works to understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Children have their own personal art sketchbook where they record and demonstrate the skills they have explored and mastered. Their sketchbook moves up with them each year and enables them see how their skills have progressed and to reflect on their art and design learning journey.
Whole school displays
At Westbury-on-Trym our whole school displays are creatively used as a platform to share each year group’s learning from the previous term with the rest of the school family and community. The displays are a ‘showcase’ of the historical and geographical topic learning that has taken place, demonstrating original and innovative cross curricular links that have made within the children’s learning experience.
